Thread for talking about 2021 Presidents Cup tournament
This is our first year playing Presidents Cup because last year was cancelled so I’m not familiar with how team eligibility works for this tournament. Is it customary that ASL1 teams at the top of their flight enter Presidents Cup rather than State Cup? I guess I don’t understand why an ASL1 team would want to play in a tournament with essentially OL league teams and ASL 2 teams? Other than the obvious to just beat everyone?
Presidents cup is typically ASL1 and lower teams. There is a drawing where one or more teams from ASL1 can play in State Cup (APL or higher) but slots are limited. Also its a pay to play tournament so many teams simply choose to not participate.
Rules are here https://www.azsoccerassociation.org/assets/77/6/azprescup2021__clean_final_for_2021.pdf
but the section you are looking for is:
The Arizona Presidents Cup shall be open to all ASA Tier 1, 2 and 3teams registered to ASA through one of its appropriately affiliated leagues in specific age groups. 6.1.1Exception: Teams that participate in Arizona Premier League for the following seasons will not be eligible for Presidents Cup:220.127.116.11U-18U: Arizona State League or Arizona Open League or other affiliate league are eligible.
Got it, I just assumed state cup was for state league teams or at least APL and ASL1 and presidents cup was for the lower level teams. The team that got into State Cup is almost dead last in ASL1 and the team entered in Presidents Cup is first so I was confused. Thanks for the info!
The draw is up. I have odds on excel. Lol. Very good team
Do you have the link?
Sorry I misspoke. I meant to say that the accepted teams are up. Not the draw. My bad
I see the Spartans winning the 07B group pretty easily.
Another update. Brackets are up
Let's go 07s. Who will be fighting for 2nd place?
here is the corredt on:
Do they not let ASL2 teams in State Cup?
How is 07 Spartans not in state cup. They won ASL2 didn't lose a game...won most their games with scores 9-0 or more. Don't think they have lost a game this year. Beat the teams they played from APL or ASL1. They are in presidents cup against open league teams that they have beat 10-0 or better...all of them. Do they not apply for state cup so they can have a cake walk?
I dont know specifcally, and I m sure others do, but I think because ASL2 is 2 tiers below APL, then the "best" they can do is gold flight in Presidents. APL is for state only.
Same story of 06 g excel
I kind of figured. Thought maybe winner of ASL2 would get in state cup at least especially when they are as Dominant as they were.
Also, I think it’s kinda crazy how an open league 2 team can be in presidents cup gold. Granted, maybe this particular team shouldn’t have been in open league 2 in the first place - I don’t know their situation...
I agree, I would love to see the state league expanded to include the regular season winners of their respective divisions, and the "best of the rest" in presidents cup (which seems like this is what happens, in presidents)
Nothing preventing State League 2 teams from competing in State Cup if they have a good enough resume. Del Sol II is SL2 team competing in State Cup at the Boys 2008 level. Del Sol is on the same level as the other teams in State Cup and has a decent shot to make the final.
The team that won SL1 in that same age group (2008 Boys) opted to play President's Cup.
If you mean Sanchez....they should of been ASL2 they tried but got denied. They are maybe 2nd or 3rd best team in presidents cup gold bracket. They have two really good kids that will be ECNL and MLS next season.. Easily get to the finals, but that spartan team all around is really good going to be tough to beat.
They must of not wanted to tarnish their record and compete with the big boys then. Their resume is really good.
